There once was a recluse in much despair, for a troublesome sin had befriended him, and was with him all the days.
Said the nights he tired, with rest desired, still the friend refused his request to lay.
Said fear had crippled him, yet no counselor was allowed near. Even worry had quickened his speech, for the friend had befriended him.
Prayed he all day, the friend would go away, even accused the sinister friend of leading him astray.
With disdain shouted he: “Why have you befriended me troublesome sin? Who am I to you? What cause have you to cause me harm, to sadden my songs? I have prayed you gone!”
And within his heart was his questions answered, saying:
“Announcing his name as Depression did he. Falsely accused was his accusation against me. Said it is I who worries and is consumed with fear. So, it was I who had befriended him.” © 2024
